Maine has launched a new initiative around Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as part of implementing LD 1829, “An Act to Build Housing for Maine Families and Attract Workers to Maine Businesses.” This legislation makes it easier to develop ADUs and multifamily housing by revising subdivision requirements, removing owner-occupancy mandates, reducing minimum lot sizes, and increasing the number of dwelling units permitted on a single lot. City-council municipalities face a compliance deadline of July 1, 2026, while towns governed by town meetings have until July 1, 2027.”
